Valentine’s Day Isn’t For Lovers

Valentine’s Day isn’t for lovers, you know…

I used to think Valentine’s Day was just for lovers. A day for roses and chalky heart candies spelling “kiss me.” Chocolate truffles, a bubble bath, a glass of wine, and an expensive dinner… Perhaps a surprise flight for 2 to Santorini for a week of romance… Excuse me. That’s not Valentine’s Day. That’s a Hallmark movie.

Don’t misunderstand. Our household likes chocolate and flowers, and the occasional gift is a fun surprise. But Valentine’s Day is a family affair. And it starts early in the morning, around the table.

I Love You. XOXO

There are streamers, a red tablecloth, tacky pink and white doiley hearts, and a banner that reads, “I love you. xoxoxoxo.” The banner is old. The letters are bent, and the hot pink glitter is chipping off. Yet, I put it up, anyway. Next, I set the table with Valentine’s Day paper plates, napkins, flowers, and a candle.

I mix the pancake batter, heat the electric skillet, and attempt to pour the batter into heart shapes across the griddle. It takes a few minutes, but I try to have breakfast by the time everyone makes it downstairs. Then we can eat together before the day gets ahead of us.

These days Valentine’s Day looks different. Our breakfast is smaller since the boys are grown and live across the U.S. We will also miss Alan this year since he is serving at Ft. Bragg. Nevertheless, on February 14, 2023, McKinley will wake up and wander downstairs. Once her eyes focus on the kitchen lights, she will see the gaudy Valentine’s decorations and heart-shaped pancakes with maple syrup and raspberries. Then she will smile and say, “I love you, too, Mama.”

For Lovers or AND Families

Is it wrong to hope my kids never think of Valentines’s Day as just a day for lovers? I don’t know. But if they think of Valentine’s Day as a day for doting on their families, the world will have just as much love and many happy endings. I’m ok with them thinking it’s for both lovers and families.
